About our Society
The society aims to make as many career and educational opportunities available to our members as possible. We aim to diversify the type of events ranging both in terms of types of legal career and type of event e.g. workshops, talks and one-on-one support. Previously, the USLS has organised trips to the UK Supreme Court, as well as host a range of brilliant alumni who come to speak to current students about many career opportunities in law and beyond; this alumni networking event includes a wine and cheese evening, which allows to students to mingle with alumni and speak to them in-depth. Workshops are held regularly, with guest speakers from law and law-related backgrounds including Gena Miller and Baroness Hale of Richmond; in the past, those workshops have been hosted by Clifford Chance, Macfarlanes, as well as BPP and the University of Law. In addition, we have helped attract recruitment teams from London and local firms to Sussex to speak to students about pupillages, masters, apprenticeships, vacation schemes and training contracts.

Alumni Testimonials
Alumni are important to us and act as great inspiration for present members, we intend on building this section to show stories of our Sussex law graduates and where they find themselves today. A great example for our society has been Marcus Hayes, managing partner at Mason Hayes Solicitors – an alumnus who has benefited the legal community as a whole, given back to our law society and inspired the university that supported his academic development.
Having completed both my undergraduate LLB and first LLM Masters at Sussex, I am now at UCL studying towards my second LLM in International Commercial Law at UCL whilst also acting as co-Managing Director of a new start-up, London Law Tutor Ltd. My time at Sussex, aided by the tremendous efforts of the Law Society, has put me in a strong position in relation to my future career. Networking events arranged by the Law Society were the beginning of a long series of networking opportunities that have given me useful contacts and that “foot in the door” when it comes to work experience and mini-pupillages.

London Law Tutors Ltd.
During my three years at Sussex the University and the Law Society gave me so much. Surrounded by inquisitive peers and stimulating teachers it helped to stretch my imagination, diversify my perspective and push and challenge my comfort level. In encouraging me to challenge convention and to think independently, Sussex not only provided a great academic education but gave me tremendous self confidence upon graduation to go out and achieve whatever I wanted to achieve in life. Fortunately for me and thanks to the University and the Law Society, that is what I have managed to do.
